I’ve never seen the literal red belly. I’ve only had a glimpse of the belly a few times. I couldn’t see the redness except in the photo. It always seems strange to call these red-bellied woodpeckers without seeing the belly, and seeing the red head so prominently. I don’t know if you remember the beautiful red headed woodpeckers around here, but their numbers have plummeted in recent years. There are a lot of theories as to why, but loss of oak and beech savannas seems to play a part.
